1. Halloween ACTIVITY Countdown
Nothing is more exciting for kids than the anticipation of upcoming festivities, and Halloween has become one of the most important holidays in the US. Countdowns are fun for kids because they keep the level of excitement high. But there are so many fun, yet simple, things we can do to celebrate Halloween, why not use the Countdown to spread those activities over several weeks leading up to the big day? That’s what makes this Halloween Countdown unique. Instead of crossing off days (boring!) or eating treats every day (not so healthy) we designed this Countdown to reveal a fun, Halloween activity (of your choosing) each day. Your kids will be so excited to flip open the card each morning and see what you have planned for them. It doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. It can be as simple as reading a Halloween story.
2. We’re BATS about HONESTY
This adorable family of bats creates a very engaging and whimsical system for rewarding honest behavior. You start with s string of bats hanging upside down with their wings folded in. You can pin them to ribbon on a bulletin board or hang them with little black clothespins (available on amazon). Whenever your child (or student) tells the truth or does the right thing in a difficult situation where there is an opportunity to be honest or dishonest, you reward them with a TREAT for TRUTH bat. Let them choose one of the upside-down bats and open its swings to reveal a small coupon on its chest, then write the child’s name on the coupon. Think of a variety of
different treats so that the choosing is as exciting as picking door number 1 or door number 2. The open bats can go back on the bulletin board or consider hanging them on branches in a vase that you keep on the dinner table or in a central place in the classroom.
3. Tell the TRUTH or LIE? Game
We spend a lot of time talking to our children about the importance of being honest - because “it’s the right thing to do.” But “doing the right thing” is not always a strong motivator for kids. It helps to define a clear connection between honesty or dishonesty and the actual benefits and consequences that come as a result. WHAT makes it especially difficult is that telling a lie can result in some very appealing and immediate benefits, like winning a game or an award, getting a job or a promotion, earning recognition, admiration, or popularity, and NOT getting into trouble. The long-term benefits of telling the truth usually seem less important at that moment. This game helps children think about, and understand, the long-term consequences of telling a lie versus the long-term benefits of telling the truth. And it’s fun!
