1. PIN the TAIL on the TURKEY
You can’t have too many fun family games around to play at Thanksgiving. Whether it’s that restless period before you sit down to eat, or after dinner, during the I-just-feel-like-taking-a-nap period, when the kids - who haven’t stuffed themselves into a food coma like the adults - have so much energy, it’s always a good time to pull out the “PIN the TAIL on the TURKEY” game. It’s simple, quick and everyone can play. All you need to do before the big day is (1) print one or more of the turkey pages, (2) cut out the colored feathers, (3) gather up some push pins, and (4) find some scarfs or strips of fabric for blind folds. If you’re not old enough to remember playing “Pin the Tail on the Donkey,” there is probably an older member of the family who does. This is an easy game that gets everyone laughing. Two more fun games you can add to keep the party going: FAMILY TRIVIA BINGO and The GRATITUDE Game.
2. The GRATITUDE Challenge
With all the Thanksgiving decorations and activities going on around us, November is the ideal time to talk about the importance of gratitude with our children. But if we really want gratitude to become a part of how they think and behave, we need to do more than talk. We need to practice, challenge and reward gratitude - and all of that is more effective if we have the tools that make it EASY for parents and FUN for kids. Use these adorable Thanksgiving Gratitude Pockets to encourage everyone in your family to explore the different people, things, and experiences they are grateful for. It helps to give kids a list of general topics to inspire them. That list might include Family, Friends, Health, Home, Nature, Values, Life Lessons, Hobbies, Work/School, Experiences, Gifts, Food, Faith, Music, Teachers, Coaches, Vacations, Memories, Belongings, Family Traditions. Research tells us that the more you look for good things, the more the brain becomes trained to look for good things. Which is why saying “Three Good Things” every night at dinner is a powerfully effective way to permanently change how your children think and behave.
3. Our GRATITUDE Game
The Game of GRATITUDE is a simple and fun way to talk to your kids about being grateful. Kids learn better when they are not in trouble for doing something wrong. They learn better when they can discuss various situations and think about how it would make them feel if someone thanked them for something they did. There are 30 cards and each one describes a different situation where someone is faced with an opportunity to show appreciation and gratitude - or not. What they decide to do determines whether the player moves forward or backward. This is a family game, designed to help families talk about generosity - with siblings of various ages - so feel free to improvise to help younger kids understand the concepts. See the last page for paper suggestions, supplies needed, and assembly instructions - which is very simple.
